Have you heard of Game Change Phenomena? It's the use of taking computer game experiences into the real humankind. And while scientific research into the process is inactive relatively reedy on the ground, I bet you've done it yourself. I know I accept. Every shopping mall air vent is a Batman stealth takedown opportunity. All rooftop is ripe for Nathan Drake-esque traversal. Every viewing of Game of Thrones incurs an "suppose if Drear Souls did something like this" piece of commentary. With Elden Ring, it kinda has.
Because while crafting the latest of FromSoftware's typically dark, artful and hard-as-nails action roleplayers, Hidetaka Miyazaki and his team sought-after the creative services of the A Song of Fire and Ice author George RR Martin. A Song of Fervency and Chicken feed, of course, was adapted into HBO's A Game of Thrones fantasy dramatic event serial publication. "I have some good memories of those initial discussions," says FromSoftware's creative director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Sharpness magazine. "[Saint George RR Martin] really knew about the Dark Souls games. I knew immediately from talking to him, it just became plain his skill and his passion for the phantasy genre, and for games also."

Despite tuning into all three available three-hour demonstrate sessions during Elden Ring's closed network test weekend happening PS5 late last year, I felt like I barely scraped the control surface of its open-world phantasy sprawl. This is clearly the nigh changeable and explorable realm FromSoftware has of all time built – one packed with enemies, dungeons, non-hostile wildlife, and foragable resources, in a blend that more closely reflects the likes of Skyrim than its spiritual forerunners in Darkish Souls, Serkiro, and Bloodborne.
Still, unlike anything found in Elder Scrolls games, Elden Ring appears to replicate the Souls series' loose, story-calorie-free narrative structure, whereby in-game storytelling is told mostly through item descriptions, item placement, circumstance, and the player's own interpretation of complete of the higher up. Per se, Miyazaki says he and his squad could successively utilise George RR Martin's ingenious input to its brimful potential – that the esteemed novelist and directing hand of HBO's Game of Thrones wasn't brought in to write Elden Ring's narrative, but instead to help steer its story elements from a more foundational viewpoint.

Miyazaki says the novelist's input was only text-based, educational yet open-ended, detailing the fall of story as it relates to Elden Ring's macrocos and the figures who appeared inside it, but all in ways that Miyazaki and his team could interpret their own way. Given that version has played such a central role altogether of FromSoftware's games up to now, all of this is fitting, and, naturally, exciting – so much so, IT's no surprise that Elden Ring topped your Nigh Wanted list at the Golden Stick Awards 2021. I tin can't waiting to go game exploring. And to continue slaughtering sheep, of course.
